Same O'Clock
1/9Pip Barker lived fourteen floors up, in a flat in Singapore, where it is hot even at night. She had saved up a hundred things to tell her granny, and she had said none of them. Until today, Granny had lived in the phone. In the phone she was small, and she held the screen so close she was mostly nose. Then, at teatime, the lift doors opened, and out came Granny. "THANK YOU, LOVE!" she told the lift. She was enormous. She smelled of aeroplane and mint imperials, and she hugged Pip so hard that both flip-flops came off. Pip put her chin inside her T-shirt, the way she did when she felt shy, and stayed in there till bedtime.
